Natural and Beneficial Functions
            Of the Local Floodplain

The Town of Lake Clarke Shores utilizes swales to collect storm water away from homes and directs the water into the storm drains, canals and lakes that surround our area. Because the swales are wider than they are deep, the storm water is spread over a broader area. This allows the water to temporarily pond in the swale. Ponding allows the water to soak into the soil which helps reduce the amount of water that flows into the storm drains, canals and lakes. The grass that grows within the swale prevents swale erosion and filters the water. This helps to remove the sediments, heavy metals and hydrocarbons, such as oil and grease, from the water before it reaches the waterways.

Residents should never alter their swale. They should keep their swale area clear of debris and overgrowth of vegetation to allow for the natural flow of water.
