Flood Safety

Floods can happen at any time with little or no advance warning. Please remember the following safety tips in the event of a flood:

  • Do not walk through flowing water no matter how shallow it seems to be. Six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet.

  • If you walk through standing water, use a pole or stick to check the ground before you step.

  • Do not drive through flooded areas or around road barriers. Drowning is the number one cause of death from flooding.

  • The second most frequent cause of death from flooding is electrocution. Stay away from electrical wires and downed power lines. Contact FPL at 1-800-4OUTAGE to report downed power lines.

  • Do not touch any electrical equipment if you are wet or if you are standing in water. If you can safely turn off your electric at the main power switch, do so.

  • If possible, turn off the gas at the meter. Be alert for gas leaks. Do not smoke or use open flames unless you know the gas is off and the area is well ventilated.

  • Look out for small animals and snakes as they may seek shelter in your home after theirs is flooded.

  • After floodwaters recede, the ground and floors are covered with mud and debris. Please use caution when walking and during clean up.
